As the mercury rose to unseasonable April temperatures, so did the heat on the horses offered at the Inglis Easter sales. There were 534-catalogued of the best-quality Thoroughbred yearlings available in Australia offered by 61 vendors at the Riverside Complex at Warwick Farm in the past week.
Morgan + English took five minutes to catch up with a few famous names to ask a question or two.

Probably the excitement when you have spent so much time breeding, raising and preparing a horse, and the excitement a good result brings.

A $400,000 yearling.

What’s your favourite thing about coming to the sales?
Catching up with everybody in the industry, seeing all the hard work paying off with great results for the farm and our clients. It’s also a chance to get off the farm and have dinner and drinks with friends and colleagues.
What’s the most expensive horse you have sold at Easter sales?
We sold a Testa Rossa filly out of a mare, Addictive for $340,000. In that same draft we also sold a horse to Bart Cummings for $240,000 who was used as a promotion for the Daily Telegraph and was on the front page of sports section (pictured).

What’s your favourite thing about coming to the sales?
I’m lucky in that I’m working in an industry that is my passion and I love all aspects of the sales, from the horses at the sales to the comradery among the people.
What’s the most expensive horse you have bought at the Easter sales?
We bought a $1.3 million yearling this week. She is by Snitzel from the famous Aga Khan family that is just about impossible to buy into in Europe. Not only is her pedigree amazing but she was a queen; the best moving horse on the complex in my opinion.
Will Winx make 25 consecutive wins on Saturday?
I’m biased being associated with the Waller stable but I do think she will make it 25 straight wins this Saturday. She is the best I’ve seen!

What’s your favourite thing about coming to the sales?
I love the atmosphere and buzz around the complex. It’s always so exciting seeing yearlings you know are going to be Group One winners in a year or two.
What’s the most expensive horse you have sold at Easter sales?
This was our first Easter sale, we were very happy to have sold a filly for $260,000.
